The Brasserie at Sopwell House
St. Albans, Hertfordshire
Overview
The Brasserie at Sopwell House feels exactly as a modern country-house restaurant should: assured, comfortable and well put together. Natural light streams through wide windows overlooking the gardens, while layered textures, warm tones and thoughtful lighting shift the mood from bright morning dining to softly lit evenings.
The setting carries weight. Sopwell House is a Grade II listed manor with more than 300 years of history and was once the private residence of Lord Mountbatten. That heritage gives the Brasserie presence, but the space itself is firmly contemporary - less formal dining room, more polished gathering place.
Inside, curved banquettes create discreet corners for longer lunches or dinner conversations. Timber finishes and patterned fabrics add depth without fuss. The layout has been carefully reworked to improve flow, so even when busy, it never feels crowded or chaotic. An open servery and kitchen counter bring subtle theatre, while retaining the ease expected of a brasserie.
Designed to move effortlessly from breakfast through to dinner, The Brasserie adds a stronger dining focus to Sopwell’s wider offering. It is a restaurant in its own right — stylish, welcoming and confident - set within one of Hertfordshire’s most distinguished historic houses.
