The Black Bull
Sedbergh, Cumbria
Overview
The Black Bull is where Japanese flavours meet hearty pub classics in Cumbria. The quaint coaching inn and dining room in Sedbergh has built an incredible reputation for its array of delicious dishes, crafted from the freshest possible produce available from its surrounding landscape. With the Lake District to the West and the Yorkshire Dales to the East The Black Bull is spoilt for choice with the quality of local produce for its menus.
The dishes in most instances may look traditionally English, but have been skillfully intertwined with Japanese influences to create delicious extra layers, that have proven a real winner. Chef Nina Matsunaga, born in Germany to Japanese parents, brings a distinctive culinary style using fermentation techniques drawn from her Asian heritage.
Nina and husband James Ratcliffe, reflect their love of Japanese culture throughout the entire 17th century property, which includes the 80 seater restaurant with its 18 bedrooms. They are also keen that the building retains its identity as a great pub, with the bar offering wines (21 reds and 21 whites), and beers and spirits from small batch producers.
And for extra joy, they also run the deli across the road.
