Overview
We are delighted to announce that The Angel at Hetton has recieved 5 AA Rosettes:
"Long known for its food, the Angel has been elevated to another level under chef Michael Wignall. Outside it might look like a classic Yorkshire coaching inn, but within the newly refurbished interiors you’ll find calmly minimalist decor – exposed stone, pale grey upholstery, polished concrete floors, beams – that gives a quietly stripped back feel and ensures full focus is on the cooking. Tables are simply laid, with rough linen napkins and stoneware place settings, and the slightly labyrinthine collection of dining rooms are warmed by woodburning stoves. Service, from a young team, is intelligent and efficient. This is one of the best restaurants in the country and it gives the reassuring air of a place where every detail has been considered. Wignall’s style might be described as intricate and delicate and he’s one of the few chefs in the country who can deliver food at this level – featuring complex combinations of many different elements in relatively small amounts and creating dishes of absolute cohesion. This is sharp, precise cooking, with complex layers of clear flavours and textures, the many elements in each dish ensuring no two bites are the same but all are an equal delight for the senses. A choice of frequently changing menus includes à la carte, tasting menus (lunch, dinner, and vegetarian options) and a seasonal lunch menu. A technically immaculate dish of Devonshire smoked eel with Oscietra caviar, white chocolate, horseradish and Granny Smith demonstrates brilliant skill in balancing such a complex combination of flavours so deftly. Another great dish of calves’ sweetbread, turnip top pesto, Perigord truffle and buckwheat, provides a generous piece of sweetbread, with textural contrast coming from the buckwheat and the turnip garnish. A lamb dish showcases a spot-on pink-cooked loin, with rib, sausage and bacon all equally impressive, and a harmonious combination of girolles, ewes’ curd and salsa verde add fresh and earthy elements." - AA Inspector
Hetton is a small hamlet, approximately six miles from the historic town of Skipton in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Angel Inn can be found in the centre of the village.
The Angel Inn at Hetton is widely regarded as the UK's original gastropub, and is number 4 in the 2022 Extrella Damm Top 50 Gastro Pubs in the country. This ancient inn has origins which date back to the 15th century, forming the basis of hundreds of years of delicious dining and drinking history. In recent years it has held the reputation of being the destination establishment, in one of the most exquisite corners of the North Yorkshire Dales. Famous for its food as well as its warm, welcoming atmosphere - it has maintained a strong following among locals as well as with customers from all over the world.
In September 2018 Michael Wignall took the helm as Chef Patron, and delivers food that wows on every plate. His ever-evolving style creates unique dishes full of flavour, underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine. Describing his food as 'modern, technical and meaningful', each element brings flavour or texture, enticing diners to experience new combinations and ingredients.
