Overview
Unwind at Burgh Island - the iconic Art Deco island hotel, renowned for its celebrated restaurants. The South Devon retreat famously inspired Agatha Christie's captivating stories, captivating stories, weaving its way into folklore as the backdrop of some of her most thrilling plots. The landmark on its own tidal island and surrounded by golden beaches and silver seas, is a magnificent example of the architecture of the day with the added quirk of the poop deck from the HMS Ganges (1821), the Royal Navy's last fighting sailing ship incorporated into the restaurant when it was scrapped in 1929.
Arriving at Burgh Island is unlike the majority of hotels as it usually involves the use of the third generation hydraulic Sea Tractor, the only one in the world. Designed in 1969 by Robert Jackson CBE in exchange for a case of champagne and costing £9,000 to build, the Sea Tractor is an historic icon - recently renovated, she is the best way to arrive through the surf to Burgh Island. This isn't just pure nostalgia, though - Burgh Island serves legendary cuisine and is open to both hotel residents and non-resident alike in both The Grand Ballroom and The Nettlefold Restaurant.
