Here at Design Restaurants we note with interest the findings from report ‘Eating Out in the UK 2010’ as reported in Caterer Magazine revealing that whilst the dining industry remains steady in terms of value, less people will be eating out, with one in home, down from one in nine in 2009 (this includes fast food outlets, pubs, coffee shops).

One key fact from the report is that discounting has become a permanent feature in the market, with nearly four in 10 adults using vouchers on a regular basis. The report also found a major trend towards healthier eating, sustainability and food provenance from local sources.

Design Restaurants have had the same feedback from our members, who are enjoying more dining reductions than ever at top end restaurants. In our experience, the membership card is better received by both guests and restaurants as a permanent benefit solution, rather than short term dining vouchers, which members perceive to be more downmarket or for the middle market chains.

Overall, trends indicate that fine dining restaurants welcome high end membership cards such as Design Restaurants and the type of gourmet members they attract, and that it is less or a rarity and encouraged by the restaurants to attract more visitors.

Over the past 12 months, online bookings through Design Restaurants have doubled, as more and more restaurants open their reservation systems online.

Overall, whilst the restaurant economy continues to be tough, there is a secured place in the fine dining market for discreet, exclusive member benefits, complimentary dining and added value.
